Lawyer Salary

How Lawyers Charge for their Services

Whenever you are in need of a lawyer’s services, you have to be clear from the start on how you are going to settle the fees and bills incurred during his or her service. You should make an agreement or an arrangement on how you are going to pay for the services he/she rendered. The agreed upon values should be based on the lawyer’s credentials and experience. Here are some of the ways attorneys may charge their clients.

Probably the most common way a lawyer may charge his client is on an hourly basis. Normally, clients have to give an initial payment or retainer and then a fixed amount will then be agreed upon by both parties. Keep in mind to request a statement of account periodically and that other bills like long distance calls, travel expenses and other costs will be shouldered by the client.

In cases of personal injury and employment discrimination cases, attorneys will charge you a contingency fee. A contingency fee is a percentage of the amount of money that will be awarded to the client in case of settlements. An agreement should be made because if the client loses the case, the attorney will receive nothing for his services. The client will also be responsible for court-related fees. Because of this, lawyers should carefully gauge the chances the client has in winning the case.

Lawyers could also charge a monthly fee provided that they allot a certain amount of time to the case every month. This mode of payment is not commonly used. There are times when lawyers work pro bono which means they charge nothing for their services and agrees to donate his time and expertise to a client.

Each lawyer has different ways of charging for his services and expertise. You should work closely with your attorney to get the best possible deal that will work for both of you.

There isn’t even a way to explain how much I love Canada! I moved here only in 2010 from China to be with my family, and I could barely speak a single word of English – it was so scary! T_T I was always feeling lost and I had a hard time making friends at school, even though I had great teachers who started to help me learn more English. Once I mastered the basics, things were much easier, but I still didn’t feel like I was able to use my intelligence properly. But there’s so much here to love that I really wanted to stay and learn everything I could! My favorite things are:
Painting | Walking through the parks | the Pacific Ocean | The Rocky Mountains | Visiting my family here | Learning English!!

As I said, I barely spoke any english when I moved to Canada. A friend of mine told me about a program of classes called Fully Researched, which was designed to help people practice their writing skills and their computer and internet skills too. They really helped me become confident in using English to write, and they helped me learn about using the internet and blogging in English as well. I’d strongly recommend that you give them a chance if you’re interested, since they are very helpful, patient, and they know exactly what you need to learn to get a good start as an English writer!
